They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
STEPHENS, Richard Henry, Sto 1c, V5387, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Brother of Mrs. Theas Annear, of St. Austell, Cornwall, England.
Stoker Stephens died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Stoker Richard Henry Stephens was another Montréal boy added to the list of those reported missing in the loss of HMCS Margaree today when it was learned the First Class Stoker Richard H. Stephens, 35, listed as from Liverpool, has lived here for the last five years and was a close friend of Ernest O. Hartley, 22, also a stoker lost in the Margaree. Mrs. Hartley, who lives at 407 Sherbrooke street west and was considered by Stephens as his foster mother, received letters today from her son and Stephens, in which they both expressed pleasure at being together again, having just gone aboard the Margaree. Young Hartley's letter was dated October 10 but Stephens' was not dated. "They both joined the RCNVR five years ago," Mrs. Hartley said today, "and were inseparable. Stephens had no mother and signed his letter to me 'Your foster son'." In the list of missing, Stephens' next of kin was given as Theo G. Stephens, sister, and his address as care of Mrs. Tickle, 315 Dingel Park road, Liverpool, England. (The Ultimate Sacrifice by Robert D'Aoust)
