UNDERWOOD, John Comber, AB, 3072, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Peter Underwood, and of Annie E. Underwood, of Victoria, British Columbia.

 

Able Seaman Underwood died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Able Seaman John Comber Underwood, age 20, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Underwood, 1215 Pembroke Street, Victoria, BC. He was born in Stettler, AB and went to Victoria in 1927. He joined the Navy as a boy seaman at the age of 17.
