WHEELER, Victor Spencer, AB, 3268, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Cyril H. and Freda Wheeler, of Nanton, Alberta.

 

Able Seaman Wheeler died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Victor S. Wheeler was born at Nanton, Alberta, where he was educated and was the first to make the supreme sacrifice from this city. He joined the navy at Esquimalt, B.C., in October, 1938. Seaman Wheeler was an excellent athlete and took many prizes and trophies at high school sports meets. He was unmarried and is survived by his father, Mr. C.H. Wheeler, Postmaster at Nanton, Alberta.
