Miriam Jean Nixon (née Loheed)

NIXON, Miriam Jean (née Loheed) - was born and raised in Toronto. She received her public education at Forest Hill Village School, and the University of Toronto (University College). In May 1943 she joined the Women's Royal Canadian Navy Service (WRENS), where she was a Wireless Telegrapher SO monitoring German shortwave communications for the duration of the war. In October of 1945 she was honourably discharged from the Navy to attend the University of Toronto. After graduation with a B.A. Miriam had a career in the fashion industry and in 1948 she married John Ridgeway (Hank) Nixon. John predeceased her in November, 2007. She is survived by their four children, Brad (Carol) of Toronto and Niagara on the Lake, Craig (Shirley) of Calgary, Kerri (Graham Sant) of Bath, England and Niagara on the Lake, and Kathy (Garth Stapon) of Hamilton; grandchildren, Leslie, Lauren, Kristen, Sean, Claire, Brenna, Kenneth and Meredith and great grandchildren, Willa, Dechlan and Ainsley. Her brother Gordon of Unionville, Ontario predeceased her in January of 2007. She is fondly remembered by his children, Stewart, David, (Ursula) and Mardi. John and Miriam raised their family in Don Mills and in 1970 the family moved to Winnipeg where Miriam lived until October 2009 when she moved to Niagara on the Lake. Throughout her life Miriam was an avid volunteer in many organizations in Toronto and Winnipeg. At the age of 52 in 1976 she joined the staff of the United Way of Winnipeg for ten years, following that she worked for the Canadian Mental Health Association and retired in 1994. On arrival in Niagara on the Lake Miriam joined Grace United Church and was an active member. Miriam will always be remembered for her many valued friendships, her significant contribution to the community and as a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Special thanks to Irene and Helen of LHIN Home and Community Care, and the staff at Hospice Niagara. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to your local United Way, Hospice Niagara or the charity of your choice. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Grace United Church, Niagara on the Lake. (Niagara this Week 28 Jun 2018)
