ANKENMAN, Elwood Leslie Jacob - It is with sadness we announce the death of Elwood Wesley Jacob Ankenman on June 28, 2026, at the age of 97. Elwood was the middle child of Etta and Wesley Ankenman. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Mary Ann (née Cameron). He is survived by his older sister, Lois; and was predeceased by his younger brother, David. Elwood will be lovingly remembered by his devoted children and their partners, Grant (Mary), John (Alex) and Mary Jane. Elwood grew up on Sherwood Avenue in North Toronto, and much of his adult life was spent living nearby, first on Cortleigh Cres., and then in a condominium in the converted Eglinton United Church where he attended church from childhood. He could be seen in the neighbourhood many days walking one of his beloved dogs. Elwood loved spending time in the summer at a cottage, particularly Delois and Northcliffe on Henshaw Lake, which have been in the Ankenman family for more than 100 years. Elwood was a talented trombone player, playing in the North Toronto Collegiate marching band, the TSO Youth Orchestra, the Air Cadets Band, and the Toronto Armed Forces Station Band. During his days at the University of Toronto and after graduating in 1952 with a civil engineering degree, Elwood served in the Royal Canadian Navy. He then diligently supported his family with jobs at G. W. Beecroft, Manning Maxwell & Moore, ITT Canada, Atlas Pumps and Dresser Canada. In his later years, Elwood volunteered with the Milne House Garden Club and the North Toronto Horticultural Society. Elwood will be lovingly remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, on July 23, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Toronto Humane Society.
