Hugh McEwen

C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 10 Aug 1951

Died:  06 Jun 2026, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

McEWAN, Hugh - aged 74, of Ottawa, Ontario, peacefully passed away on June 6, 2026. Born on August 10, 1951 to Margaret (née Turpie) and Keith McEwen, Hugh knew from a young age that he would follow in the family footsteps by joining the Canadian Armed Forces. After graduating from the Royal Military College in 1973, he went on to serve 42 years as a Naval Officer in the CAF. His time in the Navy brought him all over the world, to HMS Drydad (England), Somalia, Kenya and even to the Canadian Arctic. In June of 1973, Hugh married the love of his life, Bonnie (née Bruce). Together, they shared 53 years of marriage and raised 2 sons, John and Michael. Hugh was a man of many passions. Whether it was working on his substantial stamp collection, planning an upcoming trip with Bonnie or puttering around the cottage, he brought joy and dedication to everything he did. His greatest joy, however, was his family. He never missed an opportunity to share stories with his grandsons, and shared his love of nature with them. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; his children, John (Cassandra) and Michael (Amirys); his cherished grandchildren, Cillian, Jack and Tom; and his siblings, John (Debbie), Margaret and Mary. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert. A celebration of life will be held at the United Cemeteries of Saint Filians (Beckwith, ON) on July 15, 2026 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, a cause close to Hugh's heart. (The Ottawa Citizen 27 Jun 2026)
