In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HELM, Elmer Joseph - passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering optimism.
He was the beloved husband of his lifelong love, Ollie (née Bohoslowich), predeceased in 2016, and proud father of six: Ramona (Tom), Dan (Cheryl), Ken (Lori), Denise (Greg), Janet (Trevor), and Robert (Rosa). He was also a cherished grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 12.
Elmer was widely known and loved for his positive outlook, deep commitment to family and community, love of sports, sense of humour, and enjoyment of life.
Born in Comox on Vancouver Island, Elmer spent his childhood in a logging camp and later on the family farm in nearby Black Creek. After graduating from high school and serving two years in the Navy during WWII, he attended UBC, earning a Master of Social Work.
His desire to help others, combined with exceptional leadership and an ability to build genuine relationships, shaped a career in community development that had a lasting impact throughout Vancouver.
Elmer began his career at Gordon Neighbourhood House, where he helped develop nationally recognized programs supporting single parents, families, immigrants, and seniors. He later became the first Executive Director of the newly established Association of Neighbourhood Houses of BC, leading the organization for nearly 30 years. Today, the network of nine neighbourhood houses and Sasamat Outdoor Centre serves more than 100,000 people through over 500 programs and services.
To recognize his contributions, the Association established the Elmer Helm Youth Legacy Fund and named the main building at Camp Sasamat "Helm Lodge" upon his retirement.
Elmer embraced an active lifestyle. An accomplished fly fisherman, he was also a competitive athlete, winning many gold medals at the BC and Canada Seniors Games with Ollie. Together they enjoyed camping, international travel, annual trips to Palm Desert, and countless happy times with family and friends. Like his wife, Elmer was a person of deep faith.
A sports enthusiast, he helped establish North Vancouver's first public indoor tennis centre in 1999, earning a lifetime membership to the district's recreation facilities. Even after his 100th birthday, he continued to work out regularly at the gym, where he made many friends.
Elmer was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Edith Helm, and his brothers, Gene and Lorne, and is lovingly remembered by his sister Elaine (Doug). He will be dearly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
A funeral mass will be held on Sept. 2, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 2725 Lonsdale Ave. (The Vancouver Sun & The Province 11 Jul 2026)
