Desmond Bartlett Fennell

RCNVR

Died: 2011, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada

FENNELL, Desmond Bartlett - After a valiant three month battle with kidney disease, Des passed away at Ridge Meadows Hospital, with his family by his side. He is survived, and missing him dearly, his wife of 59 1/2 years, Helen (Edney); daughter Anne (Bruce); sons, Scott, Dru (Heidi) and his pride and joy, grandchildren, Shane, MacKenzie, Heath, Luke (Temia) and great grandchildren Brock and Leighton. Des worked 35 years for C.N.R. in Saskatoon, SK. He moved to BC and worked 13 years at Golden Ears Park as Park Ranger. He really enjoyed working at both places. Meeting and talking to people from here and different countries was so interesting. On some of his days off, if it was warm, he'd take his grandchildren swimming to His lake or take a lunch and they would go hiking at the park. Des was a W.W.II Navy Veteran, an active member of Vancouver Navy Vets Discovery, and also a member of Maple Ridge Legion. He made friends easy and they will miss him. He made visiting trips to Saskatoon. He looked forward to the Tuesday C.N.R. coffee row gathering, that made his day. Des really enjoyed sports, especially golfing with friends, with later watching sports on TV. Des was a real gentleman at all times. A memorial was held at the Legion officiated by Rev. Bott. In his closing of the service he read an email from Gordon Anweiler, an employee of the C.N.R., He worked with Des and Des was a good friend and boss, all at the same time now that's a sincere compliment, the Rev. said. The Rev. asked if anyone would like to express their friendship with Des. Many stood up, saying he was a true friend, humble, truly sincere, thoughtful, a really honest person, and you could always count on him and he was one person who was never ever late!!! In closing Vancouver Navy Vet President, Bugle Major John More, played the Last Post. (The Saskatoon StarPhoenix 08 Dec 2011)
