In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WELLS, Kenneth Henry - With sadness, we announce the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Henry Wells on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Hollyburn House. He was 101 years old.
Survived by his loving wife Bette of 40 years and his loving children from his first marriage: Beverley (Robert), Barbara (Fritz), Johnny (Cindy), William (Jenifer), and Carol (Ken), 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two wives, Dorothy and Gillian, his mother Dorothy, father Harry, and brother Robert (Olivia).
Dad was born in Vancouver on June 19, 1925, and spent his early years in the city until the family moved to West Vancouver, where he attended school. At the age of 17 ½, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, as he wanted to 'help defend his country during the war'. He was posted to Prince Rupert, B.C., his ship patrolled the western coastal waters and inlets of B.C.
It was there that he met and married Dorothy Beerling, and after the war, they moved to West Vancouver, where they raised five children.
He was very active in the West Vancouver Boy Scouts as a leader and organized their Jamborees.
A lifelong active member of the West Vancouver Legion Branch 60, he became President 1958-1960. He never missed a Remembrance Day Service, even visiting the Cenotaph during COVID.
Throughout his life, Dad had a passion for boating, camping, fishing, hunting with his two sons, skiing, golfing, reading, and he also enjoyed dressing up in costumes on certain occasions. Also making many improvements on recreational properties on Bowen Island and on the Sunshine Coast. He was a man of great character, personality, knowledge, and yes, stubbornness. He was also a remarkable storyteller, and his wisdom will live on through the family for generations to come. He and Bette loved RVing, and they travelled across Canada, parts of the United States, and north to Alaska while in their 80s.
A special thank you to Venvi Hollyburn House Staff for their compassion and great attention to Dad's care. Also, a shoutout to Dr. Jonathan Hislop, who was so good at listening to dad and giving him such great medical care.
A small celebration of life will be held later. Family and friends will be notified as to when and where. (The North Shore News 22 Jul 2026)
