In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
THORNTON, Ypres Clyde (Speed) - 81, Lower Sackville, passed away March 7, 2007, in the VG Site, Palliative Care Unit, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Fred and Sadie (Verge) Thornton. Speed was a salesman with Mahons Stationary for 13 years. He was a veteran of the R.C.N. in the Second World War with 26 years of service. He was a Past Master of White Ensign Lodge No. 129, past president of the Kinsman K40 Club and spent many years as a boy scout leader. He was a life member of C&POs Mess, member of C&PO Association, CFB Halifax, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 162, Lower Sackville. He was a member of the Silver & Gold Club, Lower Sackville, the Sackville Senior Legion Club. He was an ardent bowler, a member of the Senior Leagues at the Superbowl, Lower Sackville, and he loved to go dancing. He is survived by his wife, Gloria "Tootie" (Hartlin); daughter, Kim (Hans) Kreuzer, Halifax; sons, Dane (Meredith), Florida, USA; Lee, Kingston, Ont.; brother, Dennis, Dartmouth; sisters, Irene (Ralph) Craig, Florence (Jim) Boughen, both of Bridgewater; Liz Blais, Elmsdale; Elnora Rowe, Halifax; grandchildren, Sophia, Corey, Shelly, Kayla and Christopher. He was predeceased by brothers, Fred and Leonard; sister, Ola. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Rd., Spryfield (477-5601). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, in the Funeral Home Chapel, Arch Deacon Ron Cutler officiating.
