STANDING NATO NAVAL FORCES

 

This page is to provide basic background information on the Standing NATO Naval Forces and share photos from Canadian units deployed with these group.

 


 

The Standing Naval Forces are under the control of NATO Allied Maritime Command which responds to Allied Command Operations.

 

They are comprised of the Standing NATO Maritime Groups 1 and 2, and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Groups 1 and 2.

 

This multinational, integrated force is continuously available to perform tasks ranging from participating to exercises to conducting NATO missions. These forces are part of the maritime component of the NATO Response Force. (Source: Allied Maritime Command Website.)

The ships of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasure Group 1

HMCS YELLOWKNIFE and HMCS EDMONTON are now in their third month supporting the task group as part of Operation Reassurance.

HMCS ST JOHN'S in company with Egyptian frigate ENS Al-Qahhar (905) 24 Oct 2025. HMCS ST JOHN'S is sailing with SNMG2 as part of Canada’s Operation REASSURANCE. Under command of Rear Admiral Francesco Iavazzo of the Italian Navy, the task group includes flagship ITS Carlo Bergamini (F590), TCG Barbaros (F244) from Türkiye and HMCS St. John’s (F340) from Canada.
