GUTTRIDGE, Neville Howard, Sto PO, 21314, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of William Edward Guttridge, and of Bertha Guttridge, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Stoker Petty Officer died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Stoker Petty Officer Neville Howard Guttridge, age 29 lived at 45 West Thirteenth Avenue, was in the water for more than an hour before he was rescued from the Fraser sinking, and only to lose his life when HMCS Margaree went down. He joined the Navy 11 years ago, after attending Mint Pleasant and Florence Nightingale schools in Vancouver and completing his education at Penticton, B.C. His mother Bertha Guttridge told the Sun that she had expected him home for Christmas.
