BEATTY, Patrick James Holt -  Monday, August 4th, 2014 Patrick James Holt Beatty-March 31, 1924-August 4, 2014 It is with deep sadness we announce that Patrick James H. Beatty, 90, of Pleasantville passed away on Monday, August 4, 2014 at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, he was the eldest son of the late Arthur Patrick and Anna Margaret (Hicks) Beatty. Patrick is the beloved father to Patricia (Wolfe) Piecha, Bridgetown; Victoria (Ken) Straby, Sheila (Brian) Beatty, both of Ottawa; much loved grandfather to Christopher Bridgetown; Jason, Vancouver; Scott, Ottawa; and great granddaughter Cyan Piecha, Vancouver. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Phil) Pawsey. Patrick was predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years, Anne, brother, George Beatty and a sister, Rosemary (Fred) Carter. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all his family, particularly, Patricia, Victoria and Sheila. Patrick spent his earlier life in Sherbrook, N. S. where he developed his lifelong love of gardening. Pat began work at a young age, as a carpenter’s apprentice. At the age of seventeen, he joined the Navy and served for 30 plus years, retiring with the Rank of Lieutenant-Commander. This was no small accomplishment since Pat began his career with a grade nine education. He studied at night to complete his high school education. Later Pat was chosen by the Navy to attend school in England where he obtained his degree as a naval architect: with three children by then, that was no easy task. Pat’s positions in the Navy included PNO Maritime Command. Pat was a Veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War. Upon retiring, Pat also held positions as Manager of two shipyards in Nova Scotia. Pat travelled the world with his wife, Anne. A yachting enthusiast, Pat built several boats over the years, which enabled him to sail in the tropical climates that he so enjoyed, notably the 36 foot cruiser he built at the age of 82. In addition to being a boat builder, Pat was talented at building homes too. He was a great conversationalist and an avid reader. Pat was from an era where one helped family, friends and neighbours and he practised this philosophy right to the end: begin the beguine. Here’s to you Pat-May you sail the waters once again with your soulmate, Anne.
