Died: 01 Sep 2007, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

BENNETT, Hedley (Dick) (Wiggy) - 86, Halifax, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Bickleigh, Sask., a son of the late Fred and May Bennett. At the age of 16 years, he left the family farm to join the Royal Canadian Navy. HE was a veteran of the Second World War and served on several naval ships, retiring in 1965. He was a well-respected life member of Royal Canadian Legion, Fairview Branch 142, Halifax, where he held many executive positions and was a recipient of the Palm Leaf. He enjoyed his Tuesday and Thursday bowling leagues as well as Legion darts, cribbage and pool. He is survived by daughters, Mona Saulnier, Sylvia Dewar, Carol (Rick) Innes, Linda Bennett, Lorraine (Earl) Boutilier; sons, Arthur (Peggy) Gilbert, Kenneth (Brenda) Bennett, and Roy (Julie Ann) Bennett. He is also survived by hiss loving companion, Hilda Purcell, and her children; Phyllis Bennett, mother of his children; sons-in-law, John Schelleman. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, and extended family, Mike and Maxine Christo, Chester; brother, Harry, Saskatchewan; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his second wife, Gladys Bennett; daughter, Marilyn Schelleman; son-in-law, George Dewar; sisters, Lilly, Mabel, Kathleen, Muriel, and Dorothy; brothers, Syd and Reg. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, at the Fairview Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, 50 Hillcrest Ave., Halifax. Family flowers only. If desired, donations to the Heart and Stoke Foundation of Nova Scotia would be greatly appreciate.
