Born: 07 Apr 1920, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Died: 22 Oct 2008, Victoria, British Columbia

ADLARD, Alfred John (Jack) - left us for a better place on October 22, 2008. He was 88 years old. Jack was born in Winnipeg on April 7, 1920 and grew up on Valour Road, one of four brothers. In 1940 he spent a year in the RCMP and then enlisted in the Navy. For the next four years he served on a corvette in the North Atlantic and his experiences were ultimately the source of many tales. After the War he worked until retirement for the CPR Police where he developed many lifelong friends. In 1988 he and Betty retired to Victoria. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Alf and Jean Adlard, and his younger brother Bill who died in the Second World War. He is survived by his wife, Betty, to whom he was a devoted husband for over 60 years. He was a caring father to daughter Maureen (Stephen) and son John (Rhonda). He is also survived by his four granddaughters, Erika, Maureen, Alyse and Robyn, his brothers, Glenn and Jim, as well as many nephews and nieces. He often proudly mentioned what a good family he had. His sense of humour gave a lift to many of their days. Jack enjoyed golf tremendously and golfed around the world including Old St. Andrews. His other love was woodworking. His hand-crafted tables, clocks and cabinets are treasured and will be passed from generation to generation as samples of exquisite woodwork and remembrances of the man who made them. Last year, both Jack and Betty moved into James Bay Care Centre in Victoria. A big thank you to the busy staff for their care, compassion and kindness. They always made a difference. Jack requested that there be no service, and instead the family will hold a private celebration of his life. Rather than send flowers, you may wish to make a donation to the charity of your choice. His presence will be sorely missed but he leaves many happy memories. (Winnipeg Free Press)
