HOWELL, Ernest Henry, Sto 1c, V93160, RCNVR, died - 02 Oct 1945, HMCS GROU - Son of Eli and Lucy Howell, of Sydney, NS.

 

Ernest was born in Sep 1922, the son of Mrs. Lucy Howell and the late Eli Howell, 48 Bay Street East, Sydney, NS. He attended Whitney School and entered the Academy in September, 1939. In 1940, he joined the Merchant Navy and served in England until Sep 1943, when he joined the Royal Navy. A year later he was transferred to the RCNVR and was stationed in Halifax until Sep 1945, when he sailed for the Pacific. Ernest died in the US Naval Hospital at Coco Solo, Panama on 02 Oct 1945 from injuries he sustained ashore at Cristobal, Panama on 29 Sep 1945 while celebrating his birthday.  How he became injured is unknown.

 

Stoker Howell is buried in the American Military Cemetery, Corozal, Panama.
