SHUTE, Douglas Frederick - age 74 of Bedford, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2015 in the Intensive Care Unit at the VG hospital. Born in Halifax, Doug was the son of the late Frederick William and Olive Mae (Cleveland) Shute. At the age of 18, Doug joined the Army during which time he did two tours of duty with the UN Forces in Egypt (‘60 & ‘62). As well, he was a member of the first contingent of UN Peacekeepers deployed to Cyprus on HMCS Bonaventure in 1964. His service in the Canadian Military ended when he was accepted as a mature student at St. Thomas University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. He was employed by Sears Canada for 18 years, and worked in Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton, and Toronto before returning home to Nova Scotia in 1989. He became an Agent for Esso, running the gas station on Wyse Road in Dartmouth until his retirement in 2001. At the age of 67, Doug joined the Corps of Commissionaires working security at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport until his death. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for more than 35 years serving in various capacities for Bedford Branch #95, most recently as Chairman of the Poppy Fund for three years. Doug spent many weeks of the winter in his second home (‘the condo’) in Madeira Beach, Florida with the people most important to him - his family. Survived by his wife Sandra “San” Marie (Duggan) with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this September; daughter Stefanie (Blair), Bedford; son Andrew (Susan), Dartmouth; and four grandchildren Sarah and Allison MacNeil, and Adam and Sam Shute who all fondly called him ‘Da’. Predeceased by sister Jean and brother Peter Michael; survived by sisters Linda (Denis), Winnipeg; Barbara, Toronto; Peggy, Amherst; and brothers Gary (Barbara), Musquodoboit Harbour; John (Kathryn), London; Freddi (Lauren), London; Jim (Myrtle) Gagetown. As per Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place with no visitation. A Legion Service (with reception) will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 95, 1772 Bedford Hwy, Bedford, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Doug’s memory to Bide Awhile Shelter (bideawhile.org) or Pick of the Litter Society (pickofthelitter.ca). Arrangements entrusted to: T.K. Barnard Funeral Home.
