SHANTZ, Mark Steven - It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Steven Shantz, age 74, of Cole Harbour on the afternoon of September 29th. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Debby (Scallion); daughters, Shelley (Ralph) Bonang, Porters Lake; Carla (Roger) Simmonds, Cole Harbour; and his grandchildren, Taylor, Cianna, Alex, Luke; great-grandson, Kyryn and many nieces and nephews. Mark was born in Stratford, Ont., and was a son of the late Morley and Jean (French) Shantz. He is survived by his siblings, Paul (Shelley), Dale (Patty), Kathy (Jim) Burdett, Julie, Becky (Brian) Blowes, all from Stratford, Ont.; Vicky (Joe) Blair, Palmetto, Fla.; and his half-sister, Margaret George, England. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn Roscoe and Ken Scallion and his Aunt Fran who had a special place in his heart. He retired after 25 years of services with the Royal Canadian Navy; during his time in the military he was a diver, paratrooper with the Airborne Regiment and served as an marine engineer on many ships, including the BONAVENTURE, MARGAREE, PROTECTEUR and PRESERVER. He loved his family and was highly involved in his daughters’ lives. He coached them and followed them around from rinks to ballfields. He continued his love for sports with his grandchildren watching them play hockey and ball. He was an avid sportsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was often heard telling stories to family and friends about his navy life and sporting adventures. If he wasn’t in a fishing tournament, he was often seen at Red Bridge Pond casting a line. He loved Johnny Horton. If you heard Johnny playing Mark wasn’t far behind. Mark’s words: "I have been to the bottom of the ocean, the jungles and rainforest of Jamaica, topped mountains, snow-shoed in the Arctic and floated in the clear blue skies in the day and the black skies at night." Funeral will be held on Friday, October 7th at 11 a.m. in Saint John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, Cole Harbour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark's name to Canadian Cancer Society.
