In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
From the memoirs of Governor Sir Humphrey Thomas Walwyn of Newfoundland: U-190, commanded by Oberleutnant Hans Edwin Reith of Hamburg, “a youthful, bearded man, to all appearances not beyond his twenty-fifth birthday”, had been at sea for forty-three days, and surrendered 450 miles from Newfoundland. The vessel was boarded by crew from the corvette HMCS THORLOCK, commanded by Lieutenant John Eugene Francois “a hard-hitting stockily built sailor hailing from Victoria, British Columbia …one of the most experienced skippers on convoy duty in this war” (Courtesy of Peter Neary)
