Jerome James Sunderland

Born: 26 Sep 1922, Parish of St-Malo, Quebec City, Quebec

 

Died: 25 Aug 1992, Montreal, Quebec

 

SUNDERLAND, Jerome James - was born in the parish of St-Malo in Quebec city, Quebec. He was the youngest of 6 children.

 

Upon the death of his father at age 39, his mother moved the family to Montreal.

 

From the age of 16 to 18 he was a C.P.R. telegraph junior clerk.

 

On March 7th. 1941, Jerome enrolled in the Canadian Military. At this time, his older brother Reginald Sunderland was in training with the RCAF. He served as a gunner on HMCS Drumheller (K-167), a Flower-class corvette used for Trans-Atlantic convoy escorts from October 1st. 1941 to April 19th. 1944. ( 932 days).  Jerome also served on HMCS Pictou (K-146), a Flower-class corvette, from November 30th. 1944 to June 18th. 1945 (201 days).  His military record indicate a total of 54 months of service between Canada, the North Atlantic and Mediterranean with sea time on corvettes of 38 months.

 

Following his service with the R.C.N. he later enlisted with the R.22.R. Special Forces and served in Korea. In 1954 Jerome enrolled with the Canadian Army Regular Reserve in Montreal, Quebec In 1956 He enrolled with the Reserve force, La Milice in Montreal. 

 

Jerome settled in Montreal where he married and had a family. He was employed at Molson Brewery for 35 years.

 

He passed in Montreal on August 25th. 1992 at age 69.
