RUFF, Al - was born on September 2nd, 1918 and “crossed the bar” on September 8th, 1996. He served in the Royal Navy from 1936 to 1945 and was recalled for the Korean War. During the war, while serving as an ASDIC Operator, his ships were involved in the First Battle of Narvik (HMS Hostile), the Murmansk Run (HMS Essington), and in the Channel prior to D-Day. During the latter period his ship (HMS Essington) was involved in the sinking of a submarine for which he was ‘Mentioned in Despatches”. He brought his young family (wife Mary and four children) to Canada in 1957. In 1966 he moved the family to Victoria and ‘went back to sea’ serving in Stonetown, Quadra, Endeavour, YSF 218 (ammunition lighter) and CNAV Glendyne from which he retired in 1979.
