MACKEY, Donald Melville - 83 of Dartmouth passed away suddenly Sunday, November 12, 2023 at home with loved ones.

 

Born in Peterborough, Ontario he was the son of the late Hugh Melville Mackey and Beatrice Grace Mackey (Smith).

 

Donald's "Trapper" career started with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1958. He retired in 1995, serving 37 years in the military. He was a Sonar Operator on various ships throughout his service. Don worked his way up to a Lieutenant (N) and served the last part of his service as a career manager in Ottawa. After retirement he became heavily involved with HMCS Sackville (Canada's Oldest Warship), volunteering all his time with the Sackville and the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 160). In his off time Don enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife Elaine Shirley (Allen) Mackey, Dartmouth, sons Ronald, Dartmouth, Scott, (Nicole), Middle Sackville, Brent (Dawn), Corner Brook, NFLD., sister Barbara Jean (Joe) Irwin, grandchildren Cory, Holly and Jade and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by granddaughter Kaitlyn.

 

Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held 2 pm Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth, followed by a reception. As per Donald's request, burial at sea will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
