KEITH, Lester - It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of our beloved Lester on March 10, 2009 at the age of 85, at Golden West Centennial Lodge Nursing Home. Lester is predeceased by his wife Eileen of 47 years; brother Neil and sister Doreen. He is survived by his sons, William (Luisa) of Winnipeg and Rob (Angela) of Vancouver, BC; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kyle and Stephanie; sisters, Alice, Kathleen, Jean (Ray); sister-in-law Blanche; brother-in-law Bob Strachan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Lester was born August 31, 1923 and grew up in the Headingley area until joining the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Lester served on a Corvette which guarded convoys in the North Atlantic and his naval service brought him to various ports of call in the British Isles and the Caribbean. After the war, Lester returned to the family farm where he continued farming with brother Neil and brother-in-law Ray until 1989, while at the same time being employed with the Federal Government's public works department for 32 years of loyal service. He was an avid curler, hockey player and cyclist and enjoyed watching these sports on TV. Lester enjoyed his Saturday morning garage sales. He would often ride his bike to visit his wife at Golden West Nursing Home while she was there as a resident. Special thanks to Golden West Centennial Lodge who provided excellent care for Lester especially Jo-ann Cumming and the 4th floor staff. Also a special thanks to Margetta Hayda and Pat Tambakis for their time and assistance over the last five years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson's Society of Manitoba, Golden West Centennial Lodge or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. on Saturday, April 4 at 3:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. Lester will now be reunited with his wife Eileen in the Lasting Tribute Chapel. Chapel Lawn 885-9715 (The Winnipeg Free Press 02 Apr 2009)
