LEE, Donald Fletcher, PO QR II, V5761, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of George Frank and Evelyn Lilian Lee, of Montreal, Quebec.

 

PO Lee died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.

 

Petty Officer Donald Fletcher Lee, age 22, R.C.N.V.R., who was previously reported missing, is now for official purposes presumed dead. He was serving on H.M.C.S. Alberni when lost. Petty Officer Lee joined the navy in 1939 and took part in patrol work and the landing in North Africa and in France. He received his education at the commercial High School. Son of the Great War veteran R.S.M F. Lee now stationed at Petawawa, Ontario. Petty Officer Lee had a brother, Terry killed in action in Italy January 1943, while another brother, Gerry, is serving on the Western Front. Besides his mother who lives at 2665 Masson Street, Montréal, Québec. He is also survived by a younger brother, Denis. A memorial service was held in First United Church, Rosemount Boulevard and Seventh Avenue at 7:00 p.m.
