They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
TURNER, Alan Thomas, AB AA III, V50180, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of Kathleen Turner, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
AB Turner died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
Alan Turner grew up in Transcona and moved to the West end of Winnipeg in his teens. He attended MHS Isbister school, Hugh John MacDonald and Daniel McIntyre school and prior to enlistment was employed by MacDonald brothers. At a young age, Alan enrolled in Sea Cadets at the Winnipeg Division. His hobbies included sports and art. His passion was cartooning and illustrating. Alan enlisted with the R.C.N.V.R. in February 1941 in the midst of World War II, as an underage seaman. Turner Point on Kasmere Lake was named after him in 1989.
