Born: 13 Aug 1913          Died: 16 Jun 2000

 

Served 10 Jan 1930 - 30 Nov 1954

 

ABBOTT, Douglas - passed away peacefully on June 16, 2000 at the age of 86 years. Predeceased by his wife, Lorraine. Survived by his son, Greg (Maureen); sister, Gladys (Bill); brother, Ed (Gerry); sisters, Ruth (Elton) and Lorraine; numerous nieces and nephews. Doug was career Navy and joined at the age of 16 years. He served on many ships including the battleship NELSON and the famous destroyer HMCS HAIDA. He was a Range-taker in England and Chief Gunners Mate (CPO) Haida, DSM and Bar. A memorial service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson at Vancouver Streets on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at 12 noon. Cremation entrusted to the Royal Oak Crematorium. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made to The Lodge at Broadmead Foundations, 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria or to the Chief's and Petty Officers Association, 618 Admirals Road, Victoria. Awards and Decorations: DSM and bar, 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, CVSM & Clasp, War Medal 1939-45, EIIR Coronation Medal, LS & GC, Russian Murmansk Medal.

 

Doug's brother Ed Abbott also served in the Navy.

 


 

Citation for award of the Distinguished Service Medal:

 

ABBOTT, Douglas, Chief Petty Officer, 2479, Distinguished Service Medal (DSM), RCN, HMCS HAIDA - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 09 September 1944 and London Gazette of 11 July 1944.

 

"For leadership, resolution and skill in H.M. Ships Black Prince and Ashanti and H.M. Canadian Ships Athabaskan, Haida and Huron in a successful action with enemy destroyers in the English Channel." 

 


 

Citation for award of Bar to the DSM:

 

ABBOTT, Douglas, Chief Petty Officer, DSM with Bar, 2479, RCN, HMCS HAIDA - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 20 January 1945 and London Gazette of 29 August 1944. 

 

"For outstanding courage, skill and devotion to duty in H.M. Ships Tartar, Ashanti, Eskimo, Javelin, and H.M. Canadian Ships Haida and Huron in action with German destroyers."

HMCS NADEN - Enlisted 10 Jan 1930 as a Boy Seaman, RCN

HMCS VANCOUVER - Served in VANCOUVER pre-Second World War

HMCS SKEENA - Served in SKEENA pre-Second World War

HMS NELSON

HMCS PRINCE ROBERT - Was serving in PRINCE ROBERT when she captured the German freighter Weiser

HMCS HAIDA - Served in HAIDA as a CPO.GM, RCN.  Was serving in HAIDA during the action in the English Channel in which HMCS ATHABASKAN G07 was sunk.
