STRINGER, Joseph, AB, V35344, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Foster-son of Charles and Caroline Collier, of West Kildonan, Manitoba.

 

Able Seaman Stringer died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.

 

Able Seaman Joseph Stringer, V35344, 20 years old, the son of foster-parents Charles and Caroline Collier of West Kildonan. Joseph "Bill" Stringer, a troubled youth, grew up in the Knowles Home for Boys. He was just one of the hundreds of boys who were given a chance to become good citizens at the school, and when he was old enough, his national pride led him to join the navy, and he was assigned to H.M.C.S. Valleyfield. Stringer Lake, north of Egenolf Lake was named after him in 1972.
