In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
GOLDRING, Gerald Allan (Gerry) (Goldy) - No time to say 'goodbye'. Gerry left us quietly in the early morning hours of December 30, 2014, from Northwood Centre. Born in Toronto, to the late George Henry Goldring and Agnes Lemon (Christie), the eldest of nine children. Gerry joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1952, trained as a cook and served on several ships including Stettler, Magnificent, Terra Nova, Granby, Preserver, with postings to land bases Shearwater, Stadacona, Hochelaga, and Goose Bay, Labrador. Twenty-five years to the day, he retired from the Navy as CPO2. He was employed at Dalhousie University for the next 10 years (not as a cook, but with the security detail)! A loyal Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, Gerry loved all sports and playing with his grandsons. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eleanor (Butch) and their children, Shelli Goldring, Halifax; Melanie (Bill) Filtness, Gerald Jr. (Janice) Goldring, Brett (Angela) Goldring, Victoria Goldring (Ken West); and grandsons, Keelan, Camden, Tynan Filtness; Brett Goldring Jr., and Benjamin and Simon West; three step great-grandchildren courtesy of Janice Goldring. Gerald was predeceased by brothers, Harold and Ronald. Survived by sisters, Barbara, June and Rosalie; brothers, Gary, Gordon and George, all still living in Toronto and area. Gerald and Eleanor were founding members of the Royal Canadian Naval Association Branch 'Peregrine' in Halifax and both served in various positions over the years. Gerald’s stay in Northwood Centre was only a little over three months but during that period he was looked after with loving care from all the staff and volunteers. The family wish to thank everyone involved with his care. As per his wishes there will be no visitation or service, cremation has taken place with his brain tissue going to Dalhousie Medical Alzheimer Research. A family and friends Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. (Originally published in the Halifax Chronicle Herald)
