"My Dad enlisted at age 17 with the approval of his parents. He mentioned once that he was supposed to serve on the St. Croix - a ship that was sunk - but his orders were changed at the last minute. After WWII ended his parents insisted he leave the Navy and join the Armed Forces. He told us they said, "At least in the Army you have a chance to run away!""
