ALLEN, Jacob Edward (Jake) - Born in Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick, third house on the left from the road to the PEI ferry, Jake's formative years were spent mostly in New Brunswick. A true Maritimer, he grew up with an adventurous soul, learning, among other things, to fish lobster from his father, Parker, even helping him with the business aspects at quite a young age. Adored by his mother, Meritha, his adventurous nature did manage to cause her some angst from time to time. A favourite story being the time as a young lad, pretending he was a pirate, he took his mother's only brooch and dug out all the rhinestones so he could have a bag full of diamonds!

Jake knew from a young age that he wanted to join the Navy, so as soon as he turned 17, he signed up at the Halifax recruiting office. First serving on surface ships and later 16 years in submarines, Jake graduated through a number of trades from Fire Control to Sonar Technician among others. He also served as an instructor at the Halifax Fleet School and achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class … twice! Always one with a bit of a "reputation" Jake became well known as "Jake the Snake, Submariner at Large" among his fellow sailors and had the red and gold velvet business cards to prove it! One Captain Jake served with observed, "Jake Allen, good sailor, just don't let him ashore!" Enough said about that!

Following his service with the Canadian Armed Forces, Jake moved to Ottawa to work with one of the local defence contracting companies. This is where in January 1990, he met his wife, Lesley. Quick to recognize they were special together; they had a whirlwind romance getting engaged in March and married in October of that year! A love that has lasted a lifetime.

Sports activities were also a big part of Jake's life. An avid hockey player into his senior years, he leaves quite a wall of medals and trophies from the various leagues in which he played. He also loved golf, enjoyed social dancing with Lesley, played rugby and tennis from time to time and was very proud of his 18-foot orange sailboat which became a familiar sight for many years at the family cottage on Otter Lake, Ontario.

With a huge heart and generous nature, Jake's three children were devoted to their father. Sadly, pre-deceased by his son Andrew, his two daughters, Deborah and Susanne, looked to their father as their hero from childhood to adulthood. Always a favourite with kids, Jake's two grandchildren, Joshua and Alexandra grew up loving to laugh and play with their Poppa. Even as young adults they continued to make time for Poppa as he did for them growing up.

Jake leaves a huge gap in the lives of his loving wife Lesley Ullyett, his beautiful daughters, Debbie Allen and Susanne Allen-Blitzer (Elliot) and his two grandchildren Joshua and Alexandra Lapierre. He will be sorely missed by many other family and friends whose lives he has enriched.

A visitation will be held at Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, Nepean on Monday, May 5, 2025 from 11:00 am until time of the Service, to Celebrate Jake's Life, which will be held in the Chapel at 12:00 noon, inurnment to follow. A reception will then be held in the Reception Suite of the Funeral Home.
