WELLS, John Richard (Jake) - 61, Topsail Boulevard, Dartmouth, died March 28, 1998, in QEII Health Sciences Center, VG Site. Born in Fort William, Ont., he was a son of Vera (Slater) (Wells) Pudas and the late Herbert Wells. He served with the navy in excess of 42 years in both the ranks and as an officer. He commanded the naval radio station in Mill Cove. He was a long-serving member and past president of the Austinville Owl's Club, a member of Royal Canadian Legion and a past member of the Atlantic Chief's and Petty Officers' Association. He is survived by his wife, the former Wren Sylvia Balmer; sons, Scott and wife Nina, PO2 Doug Wells and Cherri, all of Dartmouth; daughter-in-law, Dawn, Victoria, B.C.; brother, Harvey and Linda, Thunder Bay, Ont.; sister, Marlene (Mrs. Murray Russell), Thunder Bay; half-sisters, Gail (Mrs. Ed Snyder), London, Ont.; Carol and Audrey, Timmins, Ont.; stepmother, Julie Wells, Timmins; grandchildren, Cassandra, Thomas and Lauren. Besides his father, he was predeceased by son, SLt Cory Wells; stepfather, Ray Pudas. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in J. Albert Walker and Sons Funeral Home, Cole Harbour. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday in Stadacona Chapel, Rev. Vincent Ihasz officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
