Ronald Whaley

Petty Officer 1st Class Weaponman Underwater, 33038-E

RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 03 Aug 1935, Trail, British Columbia, Canada

Died: 29 Sep 2025, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada

WHALEY, Ronald - age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Kelowna General Hospital on the 29th of September 2025.

Born on the 3rd of August 1935 in Trail, BC to Elizabeth and John Whaley, Ron was raised in Trail and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1953 as an underwater weapons technician. Shortly after arriving in Victoria, he met the love of his life, Doreen, on the 9th of April 1956, courting each other for eight months, marrying on the 29th of December 1956.

Displaying exceptional leadership, knowledge and skill, Ron was rapidly promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class. Retiring from the Navy in 1974, Ron moved to his hometown of Trail with his young family, embarking on his second career at the Trail Regional hospital in the maintenance department, where he was employed for over 20 years. After retiring from the hospital, he and Doreen moved to Westbank, BC to be closer to their daughters and families.

Ron could always be found volunteering in his community, wherever he lived. He was very involved in women’s ice hockey, and was a longtime coach and manager of the Trail Smokettes. It was with the Smokettes that he participated in the BC Winter Games/Provincials numerous times. Ron; with a twinkle in his eye, played Santa Claus for many years at the extended care unit of the Trail Regional Hospital. He was also an active member of the Chiefs and Petty Officers’ Association in Victoria. When not volunteering, he could be found gardening, golfing, or playing pool. Over the last several years Ron spent most of his time with his devoted wife.

Ron was very humble, and respected by many amongst him. He always wore his heart on his sleeve. Ron's wittiness, humour and memory of events will never be forgotten. He will be missed dearly by all of those who were fortunate to have him in their lives.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Doreen; their three children, Denise (Scott), Karen (Lance), and Daryl (Heather); four amazing grandchildren, Garnet, Sally, Morgan and Rachel; and great grandson, Grayson (affectionately known as “Sport” by Ron); along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, John; mother, Elizabeth; brothers, George, Jim, Fred and Jack; and son-in-law, Scott.

Ron’s family would like to thank the very supportive health care team at Kelowna General Hospital and those who have sent condolences, thoughts and prayers in this time of deep sorrow.

A private cremation will take place, with scattering of ashes at a late date. Your thoughts and memories are appreciated. (Providence Funeral Homes & Crematorium)
