In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HOPKINS, John - passed away on February 20, 2026, at the age of 75, with his loving wife by his side.
Devoted husband and best friend of Margaret (née Wigcherink) for 50 wonderful years. Much loved father of Shawn (Christina), Betty-Lou St. Louis (Ryan Griffore, the late Justin St. Louis), and cherished Grandad of Koen, Charlotte, Abigail, Devin, Eleanor, and Ginevieve.
Dear brother of Ted (the late Barb), Ken (Diane), Anne Bisson (Tom Burwell), and predeceased by Len (the late Bev). John was also predeceased by his parents, Albert and Violet Hopkins, and his father-in-law Julian Wigcherink (survived by Betsy). Dear brother-in-law of Mike Wigcherink and Ray Wigcherink (Mary). He will be forever remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and his beloved fur buddy, Barney.
John was a proud and dedicated member of the Canadian Coast Guard, retiring as a Search and Rescue Captain after 34 years of service. During his weeks off, he drove a school bus, always ready to step in wherever he was needed. A reflection of his dependable and giving nature.
His compassionate heart and quiet strength were evident in both his career and his personal life. A lifelong love of the outdoors and the water defined much of who John was. He served in the Canadian Navy as a submariner, captained the Bob-lo Boat, lived along the lake, and spent treasured time living and cottaging in Northern Ontario. Whether cruising, tubing, or casting a fishing line, John’s smile was always the biggest on the water.
John’s quick wit, classic dad jokes, and unforgettable sense of humour will live on in the stories shared by those who loved him.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to VON Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Windsor, or Parkinson Canada, and would be appreciated by the family.
Private Family Moments were held and cremation has taken place. A Celebration of John’s Life will take place on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 261, 12326 Lanoue St., Tecumseh, from 11 am – 3 pm. All are welcome.
