EDGAR, Samuel Patterson (Sam) - It is with great sadness and the family's permission, that we have been informed that one of our Submariners LtCdr Sam Edgar MBE, Crossed the Bar on the 18th May 2026, aged 88.

Lt Cdr (SD) (MESM) Samuel Patterson (Sam) Edgar MBE, born in Northern Ireland on the 18th Nov 1937. He Joined the Royal Navy aged 18 in 1956 against his mother's wishes. His Submarine Service was from January 1964 to November 1987. Mechanician in 1966, Lt (SD) (MESM) from 1st October 1973, Lt Cr (SD) (MESM) from 1st October 1981. MBE London Gazette 31st December 1987. Former Gosport Branch SA Member No. 2868 from 4th January 1996 to 2nd April 2011. Friend of Submarine Museum. Served in: HMS DOLPHIN (Senior Engineer 1983-1985), HMS OPOSSUM, HMS NARWHAL, HMS ODIN (as Mechanician) on Commissioning at Rosyth on 19th August 1966, HMS OLYMPUS, HMS SEALION, HMCS OKANAGAN (1976 NL), HMS CENTURION (1982 NL).

Sam Leaves his Wife Rita, His Sons Paul and Barry, his daughter Maddie (Mandie) and 9 Grandchildren.

The following notes from his family:

Despite all the risks of asbestos exposure in engine rooms, breathing in diesel fuel, years of cigars in messes and wardrooms, crashing his motorbike under a double decker bus, force nine North Atlantic gales, Pacific typhoons, terminal bowel cancer, a heart attack, new hips, and having blood that was permanently 20% Single Malt, he finally opted for setting sail peacefully and quietly in his sleep before morning watch on Monday the 18th May. As was the case with every football match he ever watched, he appears to have slept through his own passing. We all agree this would have been what he wanted.

Dad joined his beloved mama today, on her birthday of all days, no longer Wee Sammy but as Sam Edgar, a man who had made her proud. A testament to her own spirit and tenacity.

"Wee Sammy" isn't really how I ever saw my dad, although that's what the old-timers in Ireland called him. Sounds a bit like describing a butterfly as a caterpillar. To me he was a submariner and a sailor. In my very early years when he would be away for a long time, months and months, once over a year, it made him feel like a larger-than-life character.

The Funeral service will be held at The Oaks Havant Crematorium Barton Road Havant PO95NA on the 5th June at 11.30. Afterwards from 1pm at The RNA Club, 66 Fareham Road Gosport, PO130AG.

The family have requested that all are welcome especially anyone that remembers him. They have requested that no flowers are sent and an update will be provided for charitable donations.

Our sincere condolences are with Sam's family, friends, submarine associates and all that knew, served or worked with him.

RIP Submariner Lieutenant Commander Sam Edgar MBE.
