GILLIS, Channing Deacon - of Bedford. It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Chan was born in Point Prim, P.E.I., and was a son of Bessie and Clarence Gillis. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (O'Keefe) (Mount Uniacke); daughter, Georgia Guenther (Kingston, Ont.); brothers Eric and Lauchlin (Point Prim); Ray (Pictou). Chan is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Fagan); sister, Mary Chamberlain (Edwin), Sackville; sons, Robert (Lorraine), Vancouver; Wayne (Deborah), Calgary; John (Amy), Florida; stepchildren, Ron Kelly (Debbie), British Columbia; Joseph Kelly (Anne), Mount Uniacke; Cathy Diamond, Waterloo, Ont.; and Brenda Burke (Blair) Bedford; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Chan spent 30 years in the Canadian Navy and was a Second World War Veteran and another 11 years he served in the Coast Guard. He loved the sea with his most memorable journey being a Medical Expedition to Easter Island (METEI). Chan loved his family first, traveling, winters in Florida and the Blue Jays. We would like to thank all the docts and nurses on 8.2 the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, for their compassionate care they gave him. Also thanks to his Home Caregivers, Kristina, Deanna and Emma. A celebration of Chan's life will be held in the Royal Canadian Legion, 45 Sackville Crossroad, Sackville, on Thursday, May 31st at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
