JOHNSTON, James McKinley, AB, 2802, RCN, MPK - 25 Jun 1940, HMCS FRASER - Son of James and Jean B. Johnston, of Calgary, Alberta; husband of Leona Jane Johnston, of Calgary.

 

AB Johnston died when his ship, HMCS FRASER, was in a collision with HMS CALCUTTA 12 miles due west of Pointe de la Coubre light at the Gironde River mouth and sank as a result with the loss of 65 of her crew.

 

Able Seaman James Mckinley Johnston, age 25 reported killed, was born and educated in Calgary. He joined the RCNVR in 1935 before transferring to the RCN in 1937. At the time of his death, his wife Leona Jane Johnston, and his infant daughter resided in Victoria while his parents, two brothers and a sister resided in Calgary.
