FEENEY, John Joseph, Lieutenant, O-23190, RCNVR, Died: 27 Jun 1945, HMS HERON / HMCS NIOBE- Only son of John (Jack) Louis and Marie Theresa (née Ready) Feeney, of Fredericton, New Brunswick

 

Lieutenant Feeney died in a non-operational flight while carrying out assisted dummy deck landings.  His aircraft stalled and crashed short of the runway near the airfield boundary.  He was buried in the Yeovilton Royal Navy Extension adjoining the main Royal Navy Cemetery, Yeovilton, England. 

 

John was attending St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia when he joined the Naval Reserve. Besides his parents, he left behind 4 sisters, Rita Marie, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Anne and Moira Catherine. John's father was a Civil Engineer. To commemorate his son, he designed and had constructed an altar rail for the Yeovelton Church where John was buried. He had the altar rail shipped to the church where it was installed.
